I have received my charity climb donation card today, so that's just in time for me to do donation collection for charity fund to help the cardiac children. We (the hospital) hopes to raise RM250,000 in total to help 10 children with open heart operation. As a climber I have to raise RM10,000, so I need a lot of help & support from my friends and family members.

Mt Kinabalu Charity Climb - part 1
I have confirmed my place for the climb of Mt KK at end March. So I got to train hard for it after CNY, so that will automatically give me another motivation to exercise hard (for my own health) and also to help others (charity to operate on 10 children with heart diseases). A little bit like Kenny Sia, funnyman of Malaysian Blogger (see http://www.kennysia.com/, you will love him). He keep participating in marathon runs to keep himself fit (http://www.kennysia.com/archives/2008/12/singapore-marat.php). BTW Kenny's blog is one of the top in Msia in terms of hit counts.
As a participant of this climb, I need to raise fund of RM10,000 in the next 3 months, so I can use a lot of your spare $$ (10, 50 or 100) is most welcome!! Pls sms me with your support so that I can raise the fund for this good cause. Better still join me in the climb and help raise RM10,000 under your donation collection.

I Practise a Healthy Lifestyle
This is my 1st posting in 2009 and I am posting this latest ads by MOH which I think is very good advise for everyone.
It advocates healthy lifestyle via
- I don't smoke
- I eat right
- I stay active
- I manage stress well
- I don't drink alcohol
I am able to comply with almost all of them except I do some social drinking, not reguarly.
But I would like to add
- I get enough sleep
Getting enough sleep has always been my problem as I only sleep an average of 5-6 hrs a night, which is VERY BAD for my health.
My new year resolution is add 1 more hour to my sleep every night. It's not going to be easy cos I am already struggle for time to do things, going to bed earlier is not as easy as it see. Hopefully I can do it.
The following are some of the posting on risks of sleep deprieved
- Not Enough Sleep May Be Linked To Eventual Risk Of Heart Disease
- Not enough sleep linked to increased obesity risk globally
- Activity, Sleep May Cut Cancer Risk
- Scientists Finding Out What Losing Sleep Does to a Body
- Getting Enough Sleep? Consider Your Heart
So, how do we know we have enough sleep? Refer to this link

The passing of a Malaysian Son
I saw this from Haris Ibrahim's website (The People’s Parliament) entitled The passing of a Malaysian Son dated 18th Dec. And I am quite curious to know how he died? Is it related to heart attack??Now read this from Malaysia Today's REST IN PEACE, MY COMRADE (dated 17th Dec), passed away in his brother's house, seemingly from a heart attack. See some of these websites, pay special attention to Shukree's waistline, the warning sign is very clear to me. Don't you agree?
My Body Fat % in Dec'08
- Waistline of 38 inches (By Waistline std I am OBESE)
- Body weight of 67-68kg
- BMI of 24.5 (By BMI std I am OVERWEIGHT)
- BF% of 30-31% (By BodyFat% std I am OBESE)
- Waistline of 34.5 inches (I have lost 3.5in on my waist. By Waistline std I am still ok )

Ticking Timebomb - Know your Health Risk Factors
See these reports from
- FoodConsumer.org - Belly fat linked to high risk of diabetes, premature death
- CBS News - Belly Fat Doubles Death Risk
And to complicate matter, when the bomb exploded, the person only has less than 5min to be rescued, waiting for Ambulance is equal to waiting for coffin car to arrive. Most victims don't have the luck of having people who know Basic Life Support (BLS) or have passed BLS course around them. So prevention is better than cure - take good care of your heart!

Don't become this sad statistics, learn to understand what health risk factors are, it's not difficult & certainly not rocket science. Without warning is definitely NOT TRUE. Just like science that based on fact & figure, you need to watch your fact & figure (Health Risk Factors) of your body. For me, I will watch the following figures as a warning signs of my health
- Waistline - make sure your waistline is NOT larger than 35" (asian) or 38" (westener)
- Body Fat % - make sure you are NOT obese
- BMI - make sure you are NOT obese, but it is not very reliable as a perfectly fit bodybuilder will have high BMI (obesity) and a tiny guy with huge gut will have perfect BMI (when he's actually obese)
- Watch your cholesterol level, make sure it's not high, try to do annual madical checkup
- Watch your blood pressure, make sure it's 120/80, to avoid high blood pressure
- Watch your sugar level to avoid diabetes, a terrible disease
- If you want to, you can also watch your pulse rate, it should be around 60 to 100, preferably 60 to 80 which mean you are fit
You also need to watch your life style and your food intake
- Make sure you always have enough rest, which I always did badly
- Be Active, Get physical, have regular exercise regime like walking/running - no harm to do marathon regularly, just kidding :-)
- Make sure you eat balance foods - eat lots of leafy green veg, fruits, nuts; and very little meat, watch what is on your plate.
- Not just what you eat, eat well, good diet & good food combining
- Avoid certain junk food too
- Learn about Metabolism to improve your health
- Eat healthy cereal - healthy cereal, healthy muesli, high fibre good; don't eat junk cereal - no coco-crunch please!
- Don't smoke or cut down smoking, it's a stupid habit
- Do body detox if possible
That's all for now.

7 Foods to NEVER Eat!
By Jaclyn Johnson eDiets Contributor
Monday, March, 24, 2008
There will always be those fattening foods that are easy to make, easy to get, and easy to crave. You think "OK, I know this is bad but it can't be that bad!" Think again.
Here are the top seven foods you should never ever feed your family or yourself!
1. Doughnuts

It's hard to resist the smell of a Krispy Kreme doughnut, which is why I never step foot in the store. Doughnuts are fried chock-full of sugar and white flour and loads of trans fat.
According to the Krispy Kreme Web site, an average 3.5-ounce sugar doughnut weighs in with about 400 calories and contains few other nutrients besides fat. These sugary treats may satisfy your craving but it won't satisfy your hunger as most of the calories come from fat.
'Eating a lot of refined sugar contributes to blood sugar 'swings' or extreme fluctuations,' Nutritionist Susan Burke said. (Isn't this similar to my earlier post? - kwltan)
2. Cheeseburger with fries

The age-old classic may be delicious but think twice before sinking your teeth into that Whopper. The saturated fat found in cheese burgers has been linked to heart attacks, strokes and some types of cancer.
'In fact, fast-food portions are gargantuan, almost double the calories per meal compared to 20 years ago,' Susan says. 'Twenty years ago the average fast-food cheeseburger had about 300 calories. Today's BK Whopper with Cheese has 720. To burn the excess 420 calories, you'd have to run for 40 minutes. (I can testify to this, it took me 30min to run very-hard/fast-like-hell on the treadmail at 11km/hr pace to burn 400 calories, just 2 days ago, that's really tough run & I bet you won't enjoy it! - kwltan)
For example, in 1985 a medium French fry had 240 calories, 2.4 ounces. Today's 'medium' is 6.9 ounces and 610 calories.
'This fast-food meal of cheeseburger and fries has way too many calories and fat grams, not to mention grams of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol and sodium.'
Let's break down this meal. First, take the white-flour bun (refined carbohydrates), then add some processed cheese (saturated fat and trans fat, plus lots of additives and preservatives) and then top off with fried red meat (cholesterol and saturated fats). And let's not forget about the condiments such as the always fattening mayonnaise.
Not sounding so appetizing anymore, huh? Oh, and let's not forget about the infamous side dish. You cheeseburger will most likely come with a side of French fries, which is sadly the most popular vegetable dish in the U.S. Don't kid yourself, French fries are not vegetables, they are extremely high in fat and contain a tiny amount of nutrients.
3. Fried Chicken and Chicken Nuggets

Foods cooked in highly heated oils (most notably partially hydrogenated oil) have been known to cause cancer, weight gain and other serious health risks if ingested regularly. A 10-piece chicken McNugget from McDonald's has 420 calories, 24 grams of fat and 1120 milligrams of sodium. One Extra Crispy Chicken Breast from KFC has around 420 calories and eight grams of saturated fat. So unless you want to super size yourself, it's best to make a clean break with fried foods.

Sure they are convenient and easy , but boy are they unhealthy! These kid-marketed lunches are loaded with saturated fat and sodium. They usually contain highly processed meats and cheeses, white flour crackers and sugary treats. Lunchables get two-thirds of their calories from fat and sugar. And they provide lopsided nutrition since they contain no fruits or vegetables.
'They insidiously promote obesity by making kids think that lunch normally comes in a cellophane-wrapped box,' Susan says. 'Parents are promoting their children's obesity by buying these items. They're expensive, too. Pack a sandwich and save dollars and health.'
5. Sugary Cereal

Not all cereals are created equally. And while your kids might beg for the latest cookie or marshmallow chocolate surprise cereals, it is a safe bet they are about as healthy as a dessert. Keywords to look out for are puffed, dyed and sweetened. (Isn't this similar to my earlier post? - kwltan)
Most kids' cereals are so highly processed they no longer look like the grains they were originally made from. A healthy alternative is oatmeal. Although, if you are buying pre-packaged oatmeal make sure to check the label and see how much sugar it contains, you might be surprised.
'A little sugar isn't a problem but when the first ingredient on the box is sugar, then watch out,' she said. 'There is no fruit in Froot Loops. But the unsweetened original Cheerios or Rice Krispies are fine, and you can sweeten them naturally with blueberries and strawberries.'
6. Processed Meats

What falls under the category of processed meats? Hot dogs, sausage, jerky, bacon, certain lunch meats and meats used in canned soup products. Almost all processed meats have sodium nitrite added as a preservative.
A recent study conducted at the University of Hawaii found that sodium nitrite can act as 'a precursor to highly carcinogenic nitrosamines -- potent cancer-causing chemicals that accelerate the formation and growth of cancer cells throughout the body.' So eliminate these meats from your diet before they eliminate you!
7. Canned soup

Sometimes regarded as a healthy food, soups can be very deceiving. You must stay on your guard because many canned soups have high levels of trans fats, sodium and artificial preservatives such as MSG. Just one serving (which is roughly one cup) can have almost 1,000 milligrams of salt. Also, steer clear of soups that are cream-based, they can be high in calories and fat.
Susan says it is important to 'read labels from back to front. Ignore the health claims, and instead focus on the ingredients and serving size. Watch out for hydrogenated fat (trans fat) and sodium. If you're buying bread to go with you soup, the first ingredient should be whole grain -- either whole wheat, rye or other grain. If it just says 'wheat bread,' that doesn't mean whole wheat.'
We all want our family to be healthy and happy, so steer clear of these foods. Think it's difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle? Think again! eDiets make it simple to find healthy foods with the correct nutritional balance for you and your family. Our customized diet plans ill help you lose weight and feel great!

Understanding Metabolism to improve your health
Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) our body burns to maintain itself. It is essentially the speed at which our body's motor is running. The speed at which our body burns calories is called the metabolic rate.
The metabolism is based on the number of calories we burn throughout the day. Our body constantly burns calories to keep us going whether we are eating, sleeping, cleaning etc.
Once the daily business of breathing, eating, moving and other activities are met, any unused or surplus calories get stored, mostly in the form of fat. This means that if you take in more calories than you use, you will gain weight.
People with a lower percentage of body fat (i.e. muscular) have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular because muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat.
Some people have a slower metabolic rate and have a harder time staying slim. A slow metabolism actually causes to store fat. The slower the metabolic rate, the greater the weight gains.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is what your body needs at rest to maintain normal bodily functions like beating of our heart, respiration, and the maintenance of body temperature at a thermostatic setting just under 100 deg, etc. All these mechanical and thermometric functions require a base level of energy. About 60-75% of energy is expended by the body at rest in such activities.
You use another 10% of calories to digest and metabolize food. 1-3 hours after meal, the nutrients in your bloodstream and the food your stomach and intestines produce heat in a process called the thermic effect of food. The amount of calories you burn varies with the type of food you eat. You burn more calories to breakdown a steak than a banana and very few calories are expanded in breaking down simple sugars.
The resting metabolism depends on age, physical condition, the amount of fat and muscle in your body. You had a very high metabolism at your birth. At mid thirties, metabolism slows by 3 to 5 % per decade. By age 55, you require 150 fewer calories per day than in your mid thirties. For that reason, you should cut back on calories or increase your activity level to burn more calories, otherwise you will store additional fat in your body resulting in increased weight.
The metabolic rate depends on sex, age, and amount of muscle. Younger persons have higher (faster) metabolism because of the increased activity of cells. Men generally have a 10-15% faster BMR than women because male body has greater percentage of lean muscle tissues.
Exercise can increase your BMR
Basal Metabolic Rate can be calculated by the following formula of the World Health Organization. BMR for Female = [ 655+(9.6 x Weight in kilogram) + (1.7 x Height in centimeter) – (4.7 x Age) ] Male = [ 66+(13.7 x Weight in kilogram) + (5 x Height in centimeter) – (6.8 x Age) ]
Causes for Low Metabolism
· Fasting
· A low calorie diet
· Snacking throughout the day on high sugared foods (candy, colas, cakes, gum).
· Eating or drinking too much sugar containing foods.
· Lack of physical activity.
· Under active thyroid.
How to Increase (speed up) Metabolism
· To boost metabolism, do not skip any meals. Eat 5-6 small meals during the day. Starving will slow down your metabolism.
· Exercise daily
· Build your muscles. Do you Know: 1 pound of fat burns only 2 calories a day while 1 pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day !!! The more muscle you build, the faster your metabolism will be, and the more calories you will burn while at rest. When muscle mass decreases, the metabolic rate also drops.
· Avoid alcohol, sugar, and fastings
· Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
· Eat foods with high nutrition values
Take apple cider vinegar+honey+garlic. It is good for increasing metabolism.
Metabolism Boosters
Some of the tips for increasing or speeding boosters are given below:
Natural metabolism boosters: Chilli (chili), Mustard, Green Tea, Water, dietary fibers, foods that are complex carbohydrates and proteins.
Note that foods can increase your metabolism only marginally. Only the lifestyle changes can make a dramatic effect on metabolism.
Some over the counter pills for speeding up the metabolism are available that contain animal thyroid. You should not take these products as these may have side effects as diarrhea, increased heart rate, excessive sweating, nervousness, tremors, bulging eyes, etc
Be physically active. In an activity like walking, bowling, dancing or playing golf, the energy you expand is greater if you have more weight to move around. A 140 pound man who walks 3 miles in an hour burns 220 calories as compared to a person of 110 pound, who burns only 180 cal going the same pace.

Body Fat Analyzer
Body fat analyzers are becoming extremely popular. Some body fat analyzers can indeed help you in your quest to improve your health, level of fitness, and make your fat loss & weight loss efforts more effective.
Most people are finally realizing that improving your health, fitness, etc. isn't just about losing a certain amount of body weight. Yes weight can be a determining factor, the more important thing to realize is how much body fat are you actually burning off?
There are various body fat analyzers on sales, although they are supposed to do the same thing - measure your body fat, but they don't always give the same result. So you really need to be more careful when shopping for one, do your own research before committing to one.
I have been going around "testing" the body fat analyzers to get my body fat readings, for free of course. That's how I managed to know that my body fat percentage started with 30% and dropped to 25% recently. But of course you need to do a lot of exercise to burn the body fat. From my own experience
- exercise at least 45 to 60min at least 5 day/week
- typically your heart rate must reach at least 65% of your max heart rate before your body will start burn fat, also need to maintain at that rate or higher for at least 20min
- your Max Heart Rate = 220 - your age, e.g. my MHR = 220 - 40 = 180
- 65% of MHR = 180 x 65% = 117
Food Combining

I have never heard of this term before I read the books (Fit for Life & Fit for Life II - Living health) by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. Many thanks to my colleague for loaning me the books. The books were written long time ago so it's like granddad writing, lots of grandfather stories before getting to the point. Definitely not like the "10-min to MBA" book type. Nevertheless the content is superb!
I thought I know quite a bit about eating well such as eating small portion sizes etc, but not food combining. Just browse the net for food combining, e.g.
However I must say that this technique is usually used for weight loss. I don't know whether it's suitable if you want to maintain your already healthy weight. Furthermore this technique definitely will present problem to most people no matter where you live. We are all trained to MIX ALL FOODs together from young, isn't that food combining? No, it's totally different and you will not like it. You cannot mix rice, meat & vege together. I don't know how you are going to usual meal everyday, :-(
But I think food combining is logically. I am doing it almost all the time because of my secret.
P.S. My kind colleague loaned me another book by Harvey Diamond, Fit for Life - A new beginning. More book to read ... thank you.

Detox Plan
If you want to stay healthy & fit, besides watching what you eat, you also need to ensure that you keep your stomach & internal clean. You know what I mean.
You may want to read this - Herbal colon cleansing using psyllium
Constipation is bad for your body, so doing toilet business at least one or twice a day is a MUST! If you are having problem with this business and try to prevent it, psyllium is one common way to go. I take this with honey at least 3-4 times a week during the morning.
